The Bees' Knees

Apparently they do, sort of.

Pollen filled sacs as the bee's knees' origin is a tenuous link. Distortion of another phrase - 'the business' (da beeznees) - has been noted. And there's also a shaky reference to the knees of popular 1920's dancer Bee Jackson.
None have a strong claim but all are great stories, so take your pick.

Success

Born on this day in 1803, Ralph Waldo Emerson; a man whose work I keep meaning to read more of than just his most quoted sentences. But, hey, so far I have not. I like that Emerson would not consider this a failure. This gem is one of his (and it's a safe bet there will be no 'take backs'):

Should Happens

"I'm not bossy - I just know what you should be doing"

While doing my homework on About pages, I came across a lot of should. And when I started paying attention I noticed that should is everywhere. It's not all bad but its prevalence did spark a memory; something a hip and wise lady named Jan once mentioned:
... ... um ...
er - well it was a while ago... but it was something about abstaining from should because few good feelings ever come of it.  OK I have paraphrased poorly and it's more than likely that Jan put it to me as a question. No matter the exact wording, the message kinda stuck:
With so many less bossy options (will, would, can, could, choose to, might, even shall for starters) - what is up with all the should?

What He Said

He said it. I agree.
What is it exactly that prevents me
from placing it within this cleverly genre'd conversation?

Hear, Hear

A great psyche-me-up song was playing as Six and I set off to work recently. It led to this conversation:

Cereasly

Gauging by a colleague's bemused expression as I poured milk onto some muesli at 1:30 in the afternoon, cereal for lunch does not a brunch make. The poor fellow seemed so baffled by the concept that I was forced to reassess my choice...let me see:

quick? - check (maybe not this quick)
easy? - check (easier than drawing an owl)
healthy? - check (not that I count calories)
cheap? - check (I'm saving for a trip)

Verdict: breakfast for lunch is still a winner!

Losers Are Winners

I don't gamble and I'm a glass-half-full kinda person.
Over the last couple of days I have had to reassess those beliefs:
Yesterday at work, along with each of my team mates, I threw in five bucks for a group ticket in last night's 70 Million Lotto Draw.
This morning a colleague delivered the good news. A few of our numbers were lucky and, although not instant millionaires, a small win is still a win! Yay, right?

In fact, we had 'won' less than the cost of the ticket.
Yes, much better than a complete loss - but, mathematically speaking, it is clearly still a loss. No two ways about it. So on review:
I generally don't gamble and
mostly I'm a glass-half-full kinda person.

Milestone Puffery

via
I googled mexican dessert for something to take to a Taco Night hosted by friends. Allowing for my limited ability/motivation in the kitchen, I chose this recipe. It calls for a dough that results in a pastry like bread (or a bread like pastry) unavailable in Australia.
No, I did not attempt to make a copycat replacement dough. Instead I reached a milestone event in my culinary learning curve - puff pastry! To be clear: I have eaten all sorts of pastry-fied foods in my time on this planet however I have never once cooked with any kind of pastry, hence the milestone.
So I am pleased to report that the frozen butter puff kind works well enough. With this small tweak to the recipe I give you:
Australian Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie.
Better yet, with two other tweaks (halve the sugar and butter content CandelB suggests), I give you:
Australian Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie with
Improved Edibleness plus Bonus
Reduction of Inevitable Health Problems from
Cooking with Unnecessary Quantities of Sugar and Butter.
