Toots

I read The Maltese Falcon a couple of years ago. This pic is from the 1941 movie starring Bogart:

All right, Dad. Shed the heater. Make it smooth now.

... you're all washed up now, you and your big smile.
Hoist the mitts while I get your iron. Up, Mister.

These awesome quotes are from a short story I read this week by Raymond Chandler; Goldfish (1936). The words actually belong to a girl named Carol who ... wore a blue suit cut with a lot of snap. Her face was fresh and young and delicate and as hard as a chisel. Carol is one cool customer, folks; a lady who wants her own way.

I know the language is from a time past but I would dearly love to see the term toots makes a comeback into common usage.

oh and just in case you missed the link Old Time Radio readings in the comments section of the Goldfish link: http://otr.net/?p=aopm

Merchandising

No Sympathy
A simple two word phrase from the previously posted Name of the Wind. It was just a sign on a tavern door of no great import to the story but I keep thinking about it. It screams "merchandise me!" In the context of Rothfuss' novel sympathy = magic (to the initiated). In the real world its meaning is more subjective and I would love to see mugs or t-shirts like the one below.

Lunch Box

a compact, portable business idea (via inhabitat) :

I would love to see this concept applied to a secondhand bookshop for fundraising projects.

The Flaw of Flawlessness

If I had to name my second biggest flaw I would pick impatience (yet procrastination would be my #1).

Almost 10 years ago I made a rule about fantasy trilogies:
Thou shalt not beginneth Book 1 without firtht thecuring actheth to Bookth 2 and 3.

My torturous wait for The Amber Spyglass spanned only a few months because I came late to Pullman's series. But those few months founded my completionist complex. I don't know what sparked my need to state it with a lisp.

Recently a succession of ho-hum fantasy trilogies lulled me into a false sense of increased patience. Last week I broke my trilogy rule and started The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

Yep.
Bad decision.
Very
bad decision.
It was a fantastic first installment.

The Name of the Wind's hero is described here as flawed with flawlessness. I agree that Kvothe is too perfect but the trilogy's number one flaw for me is that books 2 and 3 are yet to be published.

Tutu II

Nevermind the typos in the AMV and never mind that the series is 7 years old, you can read more about the premise of Princess Tutu here before heading over to wikipedia for the dryer but more detailed low down.

Tutu

I spotted this quote on my friend Gihan's blog this week:
The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.

~ Ruskin
It has been playing on my mind since. So now it can play on your mind for a moment or two, too. (And you were wondering about the tutu!)

Social Despair

This t-shirt print from the dark humour of despair.com appears to be missing a media:

With only so many overlaps to fill in one of these diagrams - Blogger:
take a number!

tweetstalk is bemusing to a girl who is still getting her head around the twitter thing. However myspace went completely over my head from day one and has remained beyondme ever since.

Thanks to Mike Mendoza who posted the t-shirt link on his facebook. Yes facebook is my absolute favourite because self updating address books with bonus word games are a gift to both the well intentioned but lazy-ass friend and the avid procrastinator alike.

Bingo PB

No matter what your "sport",
racking up a personal best absolutely rocks:

B-L-U-D-G-E-O-N - 166 points - G-A-M-E O-V-E-R!

oh yeah - uh huh - thats what I'M talkin' bout!

*attempts moonwalk*
*... fails miserably*

Of course I am a much better sport face to face. In my defense - previous PB of 101 (jibbers) was only a day old having pipped the more previous longstanding 99 (wreathed) scored over 18 months ago.

So! Anyone up for a game?
