These awesome quotes are from a short story I read this week by Raymond Chandler; Goldfish (1936). The words actually belong to a girl named Carol who (earlier in the story) ... wore a blue suit cut with a lot of snap. Her face was fresh and young and delicate and as hard as a chisel. Carol is one cool customer, folks; a lady who wants her own way.

I know the language is from a time past but I would dearly love to see the term toots makes a comeback into common usage.

A simple two word phrase from the previously posted Name of the Wind. It was just a sign on a tavern door of no great import to the story but I keep thinking about it. It screams "merchandise me!" In the context of Rothfuss' novel sympathy = magic (to the initiated). In the real world its meaning is more subjective and I would love to see mugs or t-shirts like the one below.

If I had to name my second biggest flaw I would pick impatience (yet procrastination would be my #1).

Almost 10 years ago I made a rule about fantasy trilogies:

Thou shalt not beginneth Book 1 without firtht thecuring actheth to Bookth 2 and 3.

My torturous wait for The Amber Spyglass spanned only a few months because I came late to Pullman's series. But those few months founded my completionist complex. I don't know what sparked my need to state it with a lisp.

Recently a succession of ho-hum fantasy trilogies lulled me into a false sense of increased patience. Last week I broke my trilogy rule and started The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

Yep.
Bad decision.
Very bad decision.
It was a fantastic first installment.

The Name of the Wind's hero is described here as flawed with flawlessness. I agree that Kvothe is too perfect but the trilogy's number one flaw for me is that books 2 and 3 are yet to be published.

Monday: I decided not to make a list and just have a free day.
Tuesday: Signed off on an offer so I didn't make a list.
Today: List-less again!

Without a list, I just read and walk and play with the dogs and hang out with Six when he's not working. I may look listless to the casual observer but in fact I am only list-less. The difference appears very obvious from where I am currently reclining.

Two of my car windows were smashed by some blockhead who obviously took his job description too seriously. It wasn't a break in: The shattered glass was mostly intact and the car doors were still locked when I discovered the damage. Annoying.

Avoiding peak hour traffic (and having a sleep-in option) were big considerations when I first set my work hours at the bookshop. That doesn't mean it is always possible to avoid Perth's peak hour traffic though.

I was ever so grateful for the novelty of it all.

A special kind of zen gene is required to face the hellish norm of peak hour traffic... and very few Perth drivers exhibit that kind of patience. Some of them do have very fancy cars though!

It's always nice to know when I am "right".

A lady told me today that moving back to Tasmania is the right decision. She said that when we house hunt, we will look at three houses - close to the water - and that pressure will be put on us to make a decision about one of them. The lady said to take our time with the decision as there would be a good outcome.

The lady who told me all this - out of the blue, as she put her change in her purse - was a first time customer and she had just bought a book on my recommendation. So, although skeptical about clairvoyance, in the spirit of quid pro quo I will run with her prediction... and continue to do what I would otherwise do ;-)

After I moved away from home, losing my purse or wallet became a regular occurence . If not once a year, at least once every two years - without fail. Sometimes it would be returned to me as found, sometimes returned minus the cash, sometimes not returned at all.
Debit and credit cards have been frozen or replaced time after time... after time.
This week, for the first time in at least 10 years, I received a replacement card because my current one has expired. I feel like I should be having a celebration. It is a small triumph but a significant milestone!

Soon we will be selling our house. As a first home-owners house, we want to get it on the market well before July (when the first home owners government grant may be reduced). But a lot needs to be done to get it "market ready". My partner, Six, is a handy lad. And I ... well, I am pretty good at following practical instructions as long as it doesn't involve power tools.

Six, infinitely practical, has drawn up a work schedule for us:

Flowers From Outer Space

Much to my flexor's dismay, today I cut back the banana passionfruit vine (bp) that was making unruly advances from our neighbour's yard.

We planted this vine about 6 years ago to cover the ugly back fence. It was always out of control and the fruit was not a patch on the fruit I remembered from my mum's vine. In the end we removed the bp... but not before it had taken root on our neighbours side of the fence.

The bp had a really great time in our yard and didn't handle the rejection very well. I know this because it keeps climbing back over the fence... and trying to smother the Lilly Pilly bushes we replaced it with.

I don't mind the task of cutting it back because this bp has the most alien looking flowers I have ever come across in a backyard garden:

This is one very cool bloom!

But no amount of funky flowers will win me over on the permanency issue. Until this bp moderates its aggresive and selfish behaviour, it will remain relegated to the neighbours yard for most of the year.

I spent 4 hours in our front garden today; weeding, pruning, mulching, wheelbarrowing and tidying. After shovelling all that mulch around I could barely lift my left hand to rub dirt off my face . I expect by tomorrow I won't be able to move it at all; it will just hang limply by my side until it recovers from the shock.

Here is a picture of my irritated muscles. Although my unassuming biceps are a bit put out, it is my flexors that are sooking the most. I didn't even know that I had flexors before today.

But the front yard is looking fantastic and I feel great about that.

The ones in our yard sit on stems (scapes) almost a metre long. So, after pruning the Aggies I had a total of 10 gigantic fairy wands with which I cast surreptitious "wrong way go back" spells on would be weeds.

I hope that will be enough to keep the weeds away.
